How to start blog and become a blogger in India

My blogging story

I’ve written many guides that explain about blogging, and on this guide, I want to put all the recourses at one place to help you start your own blog or create a website and make money from blogging.

One of the main reason is most people land on Blogger.com from Google, as you can see on the above image. And blogger is not a good blogging platform even though it’s a free platform to use, as there are limitations and I find they do not rank well on search fines as the URL structuring is hard.

Blogging in India is very popular and millions of people are have started their own blogs with the hopes to earn money online.

However not many actually earn from their blogs because they do not know the right steps to do it. So most of them give up halfway and drop their blogs and let the domains expired. I see this daily at SeekaHost because we get hundreds of people to register domain names and create blogs with our super fast blog hosting services.

Tips to start blogging in India?

There are a few neat little steps that you could follow and get started your blogging journey in India.

What are you passionate about? It does not mean you have to be the best in the field. After all, you are sharing your journey with the reader. And remember, this is the most important part of blogging – learning alongside your reader.

WordPress, Wix, Weebly are the three obvious choices. Of course, you would require a .in or .com suffix though it is not unknown for bloggers to do well using .net (such as Leo Babauta of Zen Habits fame).

From the start, you would need a paid hosting and not a subdomain. Cost varies, but high quality paid web hosting with SSL certificate (HTTPS) and domain name would cost you about INR 700 – 1000 per year for a blog.

Learn how to register a domains name at SeekaHost:

After you got a domain name it’s time to host it on WordPress and that can be done fast if you ask the SeekaHost support team.

Just create an account at SeekaHost via client pannel and ask the support to the team to install WordPress on your blog and send it to you.

From Labnol to Zen Habits, you would find that almost every popular blog has a very clean layout. Unlike digital marketing agencies and their fancy websites with carousels, blogs are almost always plain with a white or light grey background and clear legible font such as Calibri.

Of course, you would need to add contact forms, Google Analytics, site maps, and such, but don’t let that delay you from publishing your first post. You can take this free blogging course where I show you how I build this blog.

Blog writing has only one factor in mind – simple. You have to put yourself across without using big words and convoluted grammar.

There is an art of expressing oneself simply yet in an interesting way, and you have to discover it in you. Read more about writing SEO friendly content here.

If you are setting up the blog yourself, then you do need to understand the basic steps of SEO, such as keywords, alt-tags, meta description, header, footer. There is an enormous number of free YouTube videos and helpful tutorials on the web that would help you understand it in a day or two. Basic SEO is nothing hard, and you should be able to do it yourself.

Google search engine understands that it is a blog from your About Me page and also the text-heavy content. Usually, Google takes a bit of time to rank a blog. It waits to find if the blogger is consistent enough to be ranked. Thus if you wrote a post on making the best green sprout salad, don’t worry if it does not make it to page 3 of Google in the first month.

The more you post, the more authoritative you become. First six months, you should post not less than 50-100 articles. That is hard work but also gets you on page 1 of Google. After that, you could take the frequency down to twice a week and after 18 months to once a week.

Your blog must have a stack of 150 or so posts for Google to rank it in the top five in any subject.

It helps if you have lots of friends on Facebook. Just send them a link to your blog’s Facebook page. Do the same with Twitter.

You have two options – you could be controversial and choose to go viral or be the steady and calm writer who would get there but without getting in your face. It’s up to you to choose your approach.

Also, submit the blogs for blogging lists such as indianbloggers.org

So early in the game, you are not good enough yet to get to be a guest writer. But you could always try. Remember that you cannot request too many times. So it is better to wait till you have a little bit of reputation to boast of.

Let’s look at why you need a website which you can easily have on your own blog.

Will I make money from blogging?

Of course, you will. But for that, you need to have some traffic. There are many ways to monetize a blog, and we provide a basic intro to these.

  • Google Ads – The most obvious way. You rent out screen space to Google, and they place advertisements. They pay you depending on the number of views or clicks.
  • Affiliates – If you become recognized and trusted, you could write a review and post a link to an e-commerce store such as Amazon. Let us say you have reviewed a cell phone and placed a link. Every time someone buys the phone using your link, you get paid about 4% of the price.
  • Sell ad space directly – Instead of Google Ads in the middle, you could sell ad space directly if you feel your blog has good traffic. There are plenty of resources on the web to learn these methods. Some can get quite complex and are too elaborate to describe here.
